BTC vs BITO and GBTC
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, has historically offered a way for traditional financial institutions to gain exposure to bitcoin. The product has a 2% annual fee as a percent of net asset value and does not offer redemption back into bitcoin.
BITO is the first Bitcoin-linked ETF available on a U.S. exchange. Investors are able to have indirect access to bitcoin exposure through a securitized ETF that has exposure to bitcoin futures contracts. Though as a futures ETF, BITO doesn’t hold bitcoin directly. Because it is a futures contract, the fund exposes investors to futures funding risk that can cause the value of BITO shares to decrease relative to bitcoin over time.
